Victoria VoxVictoria Vox began writing songs when she was ten. She furthered her music education at the Berklee College of Music, as a vocal principle with an emphasis in Songwriting. A few years after graduating, Vox took up the ukulele. Her music style shifted to chanson tinged with jazz, which, over the years, has settled in nicely with her pop songwriting flair. With 10 albums under her belt (as an unsigned artist), Victoria continues to grow and hone her craft. She's very personable on stage, though a bit shy at times, she's goofy and engaging, with a lot of humility. But as soon as she opens her mouth to sing, the emotion and inspiration pour out of her melodic and cleverly written songs. https://victoriavox.com

Special guests include Boyan the Bard, Matt Vargo, and Ryan Gelinas.

Songwriters At Play holds showcases every Sunday, 1-4 pm at Sculpterra Winery, 5015 Linne Road, Paso Robles, 805-226-8881. The showcase includes one featured act, playing a 45-minute set, and others playing 4-song sets.
We pass the tip jar during the featured set, otherwise no cover. All ages are welcome.

Gina Villalobos & Amee ChapmanGina Villalobos and Amee Chapman are sharing the featured set on the Sept. 27 showcase. They are on their Back West tour, spending most of September playing venues up and down the West Coast.

Gina's songs draw comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, and John Mellencamp. Acoustic Guitar Magazine called her music "indie rock, country and pop.” Mojo Magazine hailed it as "instantly addictive alt country rock songs sung in a great voice that's not only like-able but like someone you can believe.” Sample some at https://ginavillalobos.bandzoogle.com/music

Influenced by the likes of Lucinda Williams, Esther Phillips, and Jeff Tweedy, Amee Chapman's singing, songwriting and guitar playing reflect the images of the average and eccentric: lonesome highway phone booths, sea faring whiskey rebels, city wise angeled outlaws and suicidal tattooed cowboys. Amee has spent the years pedaling her musical wares in front of the audiences of Jolie Holland as well as Michelle Malone, Caroline Aiken, Sean Hayes, Nathan Moore and The White Buffalo. http://www.ameechapman.com/music/

For the first 30 years of his career, Buddy was a dancer on Broadway, and in early films. In Concert! Nashville's Claudia Nygaard - 6:30-8:30pm
601 Embarcadero
Morro Bay, CA 93442
(805) 772-8388 [map]
Price: $10

Claudia NygaardSongwriters at Play presents an intimate concert featuring Nashville's Claudia Nygaard, critically-acclaimed, award-winning storytelling songwriter. http://claudianygaard.com/  Special guest Jim Conroy (of Burnin', Bad & Cool) opens the show at 6:30pm at Morro Bay Wine Seller, 601 Embarcadero, Morro Bay, (805) 772-8388. 21 & Over Only. Tapas, sandwiches and snacks served, but you're welcome to bring your own food too.

Claudia Nygaard delivers songs that are heartfelt, humorous, scrappy, and sensual. And so are the stories in between them. She is a captivating storyteller, with a twinkle in her eye that makes everyone in the audience think she is sharing a secret with them alone. Emotionally fearless, she shares her deepest sorrows with a rare vulnerability and tenderness one moment, then a quick wit and an outlandish, irreverent sense of humor the next.

Here's a video sample, https://youtu.be/qSpXWequjOc

As a salaried staff songwriter on Nashville’s Music Row, Nygaard learned her craft well. Her latest CD “Let The Storm Roll In” rose to #1 on the Cashbox Roots/Country chart and #8 on the Folk DJ chart. Two of the songs, “Georgia Boy” and “J.C.” won the Kerrville, TX Folk Festival “New Folk” songwriting competition for her.

Claudia tours tirelessly, and has torn up the highways of all 50 states and performed in 9 foreign countries. She has appeared at over 200 fairs & festivals, including the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas and the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in New York where she was chosen an “Emerging Artist” in 2009. Endorsements from merchandisers attest to her strength as a guitarist, and she accompanies herself in performance with a Tacoma JK50 Jumbo guitar, an Eastman 605CE hollow body archtop, and her tiny but bravado-drenched Lanakai ukulele.

“Claudia Nygaard’s music invitingly straddles the fence between country and folk with a band sound that is decidedly unplugged and artfully laid-back in support of her sensually lyrical alto. And then, there’s the matter of her songs-- that rival the likes of Guy Clark or Ian Tyson in their plainspoken, memoir-like quality, rich with personalized images and a resonant point-of-view.” Sing Out Magazine.

601 Embarcadero
Morro Bay, CA 93442
(805) 772-8388 [map]
Price: $10

Small PotatoesSongwriters at Play presents folk festival favorites Small Potatoes, the Chicago-area duo of Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso. As one reviewer notes, “Behind the humble name hides a creative couple of singer-songwriters who know a thing or two about keeping a crowd laughing, smiling, and occasionally crying.” http://www.smallpotatoesmusic.com/

After 25 years, a million and a half miles and 3500 shows, Small Potatoes have become a “favorite act” by many coffeehouses, clubs and house concerts across the U.S. They have made repeat appearances at major folk festivals, including the Kerrville Folk Festival, the Walnut Valley Festival, and the Philadelphia Folk Festival.

Here's a video sample: https://youtu.be/LfK-wJSdrA0

From the start, they’ve called themselves eclecto-maniacs and described their music as “Celtic to Cowboy”. They say it has taken them “years of careful indecision” to come up with a mix of music that ranges from country, blues, and swing to Irish, with songwriting that touches on all of those styles and more. Their four recordings, Alive!, Waltz of the Wallflowers, Time Flies and Raw demonstrate that “indecision” can be wonderfully entertaining. They both sing, they both play guitars and an array of other instruments. They even yodel.

Phil Lee is, according to Glen Starkey of New Times, "a wiry little knife thrower and dog lover who unleashes a caustic barrage of his by turns hilarious and poignant songs." Another writer says, "Brash and literate and full of one-liners. He’s like the love child of Bob Dylan and Joan Rivers.” Native of North Carolina, longtime Nashvillian, Phil Lee spent a couple of decades playing drums, driving trucks, dumping motorcycles, hauling equipment, stealing hearts, eluding the authorities and raising Cain. Then he recorded several albums and toured the world. More at http://www.philleeone.com/

A Grammy-nominated producer, the front man of the acclaimed roots-rock band Last Train Home, half of a duo with songsmith Peter Cooper, and founder of East Nashville indie label Red Beet Records, Eric Brace is a prolific and admired artist. A former music journalist for the Washington Post, Brace relocated to Nashville in 2003 for a full-time musical life. With Last Train Home, he has released eight records and one live concert DVD. After moving to Nashville, Brace began touring and recording with duo partner Peter Cooper, and the pair has three much-lauded albums to their credit. You Don’t Have To Like Them Both (2008) was a #1 album on the Freeform American Roots Chart, Top Five on the Folk Chart, and Top Ten on the Americana chart. Roy ZimmermanWhat's so funny about ignorance, war, and greed? Lots! Roy Zimmerman’s original songs are a funny and forceful affirmation of Peace and Social Justice. Roy’s songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime, and his videos have garnered tens of millions of views.

Joni Mitchell and Weird Al Yankovic have praised Roy Zimmerman's work. "Zimmerman displays a lacerating wit and keen awareness of society's foibles that bring to mind a latter-day Tom Lehrer." -- Los Angeles Times. "Without a doubt, Roy Zimmerman is among the most important political commentators of the last few decades, and in the end, it's the music that unites and disarms. With music this good and humor this insightful, there is good reason to be optimistic." -- No Depression Magazine. Roy Zimmerman has recorded for Warner/Reprise Records. He's shared stages with Bill Maher, Ellen DeGeneres, Holly Near, Robin Williams, Arlo Guthrie, John Oliver, Kate Clinton and George Carlin, and tours the country constantly with his wife and co-writer Melanie Harby.
