Victoria VoxVictoria Vox is an ukulele-toting award-winning songwriter and performer. She is a one-woman-band, incorporating a loop pedal and bass effect on her ukulele, adding harmonies and mouth trumpet solos. But as soon as she starts to sing, the emotion and inspiration pour out of her melodic and cleverly written songs.

Originally from Green Bay, WI, Vox has lived in France, England, Nashville, Baltimore, and now resides in Costa Mesa, CA. With a passion for songwriting since she was 10, (first on keyboard, then on guitar), she studied at the Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA) and in 2003, she took up the ukulele as her main accompaniment. Since the release of her first ukulele album in 2006 (... and her Jumping Flea), Vox has been one of the leading songwriters on the ukulele scene (Ukulele Magazine, front cover + feature article). However, she straddles into the folk scene as well, where she has opened for Jackson Browne, Tom Chapin, Leo Kottke, and Cheryl Wheeler. https://victoriavox.com

Bear Market Riot is the “Power-Folk” duo of Kirk Nordby and Nick Motil. They met at Songwriters at Play events five years ago. Their energetic blend of sounds from folk to funk resonates with audiences of all ages. They are two heartfelt voices singing in harmony playing five instruments with their hands and feet, telling tales of adventure, equality, and romance. With a driving beat and layers of melody, Motil and Nordby create a sound greater than the sum of its parts. Bear Market Riot won SLO New Times readers poll pick for “Best Band” the last two years in a row! In 2017 they were runner-up in the High Sierra Music Festival Band Competition. As the emcees of Whale Rock Music Festival and frequent radio guests, they’ve earned a reputation as energetic hype-men. Over time laced with an array of musical influences and experiences, Arthur Watership has cultivated a unique sound and style that is often compared to Kate Bush, Tori Amos and Scout Niblet. Arthur Watership is the name given to the spirit that comes from the passion in performance; the ghost at the helm of life's journey. Arthur Watership songs are centered around a love of nature and a longing to return to it, and the human mishaps that bring us back. The band is built of a small and sturdy crew of musicians on a variety of instruments ranging from pedal steel to the rare Viola da Gamba. https://www.arthurwatership.com/

Price: $10

Small PotatoesThey're back! Songwriters at Play presents folk festival favorites Small Potatoes, the Chicago-area duo of Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso. As one reviewer notes, “Behind the humble name hides a creative couple of singer-songwriters who know a thing or two about keeping a crowd laughing, smiling, and occasionally crying."  After 25 years, a million and a half miles and 3500 shows, Small Potatoes have become a “favorite act” by many coffeehouses, clubs and house concerts across the U.S. They have made repeat appearances at major folk festivals, including the Kerrville Folk Festival, the Walnut Valley Festival, and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. From the start, they’ve called themselves eclecto-maniacs and described their music as “Celtic to Cowboy”. They say it has taken them “years of careful indecision” to come up with a mix of music that ranges from country, blues, and swing to Irish, with songwriting that touches on all of those styles and more. Their four recordings, Alive!, Waltz of the Wallflowers, Time Flies and Raw demonstrate that “indecision” can be wonderfully entertaining. They both sing, they both play guitars and an array of other instruments. They even yodel. http://www.smallpotatoesmusic.com/
